Jack of All Trades, Master of None

According to my wise friend, Wikipedia, “jack of all trades, master of none” means the following: a figure of speech used in reference to a person that is competent with many skills, but is not necessarily outstanding in any particular one.

Yes- that about sums me up. I have been a runner for almost ten years, and have never broken the 25 minute barrier in the 5k or 2:00 hours in a half marathon. I’ve competed in countless triathlons and one Ironman, and while I have collected a handful of age group awards, my overall standings typically place me in the middle of the pack at best. I am currently participating in the Crossfit Open, and am ranked 2,579/7,592 in my division and 40,870/122,409 worldwide. Clearly- I don’t see a trip to the Ironman World Championship in Kona or Crossfit Games in my immediate future.
However, there are moments and memories that have arisen from my participation in these sports that I dare to assume bring as much joy, inspiration, determination, and significance as experienced by those top tier athletes. I have felt the joy that comes along with crossing the finish line at a 50k with four of my closest friends, despite more than a few moments during the 31-mile run in which I struggled with an inner battle of a potential DNF (did not finish) due to an upset stomach and a lack of training. I have gained inspiration from those who have continued to run, train, and pursue their passion despite multiple bumps in the road,  including losing a loved one, battling cancer, career setbacks, and a failing physical health. I have stood on the sideline of countless races and crossfit workouts and have witnessed a determination in athletes of all shapes, sizes, age, and speed that has left me speechless. And lastly, the level of significance that my “hobbies” have impacted my life has shaped who I am today. The lessons learned, memories made, goals achieved, struggles embraced, fears conquered, and friendships formed is what has me returning time-after-time to the roads, trails, lake, or box.

So, “jack of all trades, master of none?” You got it- and I am totally ok with that.
Sparkle. Pounce. Get out there.
